Belper Art Group

This year is our 50th and the Belper Art Group affectionately know as BAG goes from strength to strength. Throughout this year we will be celebrating with a number of special events.

The second of celebration events is/was held at Strutts on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May. When the group took over room 10 to exhibit our pictures both as a group and as individuals. Without the help of both this would not have been possible so again a big thank you.

I must also say thanks to Paul for the photographs as I failed to get any worthy of publication.

The first of our events was held at No.28 on Saturday the 1st March and most of our members exhibited a couple of pictures, so a good selection was on display, some of which were for sale. Without the help of members who volunteered, collected and hung the exhibition it could never have happened. A very big thankyou to you all.

Albert is our oldest active member and we were also celebrating his ninety sixth birthday, which is why the large composite painting hanging in the middle was so prominent. It was painted in sections by a number of us and we couldn't see the result until it was hang as one piece. We have on a number of occasions done these sort of pictures as a group and they always cause a lot of fun and interest.

No 28 was sun drenched and packed on this particular Saturday which made for an enjoyable event.

The sunshine was a mixed blessing, letting people enjoy a little warmth outside the front door and see the pictures in bright light. It also made taking the photographs interesting in that some of them are very high contrast but I hope you can see how vibrant the event was.

Tea and coffee being drunk, cake being eaten, pictures being bought and people talking.

Some of the pictures on display have been painted on commission and therefore could not be for sale and some were just so loved that they would never be sold.

There were prints for sale and greeting cards made by recycling last years cards. So something for just about everybody.

In the center of this picture is part of a panorama painted by the group. It is another sectional painting that can only be understood once assembled. In it's complete form it is a full 360 showing King St and the end of Strutt St. The full painting can be seen at the top of the Gallery page on this site.

Finally, the birthday boy relaxing in front of a chad self portrait that could be used to define this ninety six year old cheeky chappy.
